Peter Welch,s statement on hunters and sportsmen and women
Peter Welch,s record of accomplishment in the legislature reflects his respect for the outdoor traditions of Vermont. Peter appreciates the issues of importance to sportsmen and women, from anglers and hunters to snowmobiliers and hikers, and will show the same commitment to these issues when representing Vermont outdoor enthusiasts in Washington.
Last year, Peter was the lead sponsor of legislation creating Hunter Appreciation Day, the first of its kind in the nation. This day recognizes the recreational enjoyment hunting provides for thousands of Vermonters across many generations while fostering respect and appreciation for Vermont's natural resources. It also recognizes the hunting's contribution to Vermont's outdoor recreational economy, with approximately 87,000 hunters spending nearly $71 million annually. As Peter remarked last fall on the dedication of that important day, "I have enormous respect for the sport and am pleased to welcome my neighbors to hunt on my land. I have serious concerns about the amount of land now posted in Vermont and ensuring Vermonters have a place to hunt and fish in the future."
Peter,s 100 percent rating from the NRA also reflects his commitment to the traditions that have bound together generations of Vermonters. Vermont,s laws reflect the hunting tradition that is so important to our heritage while also ensuring basic firearm safety. Peter also oversaw the passed of the Range Protection Act in 2006 and led in the passage of a program implementing a deer disease management program.
In Vermont, some our best conservationists are hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. We share a respect for the environment, our forests, our rivers, and Lake Champlain. We understand it is our responsibility to protect these treasures if we are to enjoy them for generations to come. Peter believes that we must help assure public access to open land and waterways. One method of doing this is through conservation easements that guarantee the right public access forever.
Last year Peter was named the VAST Legislator of the Year for his support of Vermont's snowmobiliers.
