Peter Fights to End the War in Iraq
While President Bush continues to cling stubbornly to his failed Iraq policy, Peter has made ending the war his top priority. Peter voted against the President,s troop escalation, and stated on the floor of the House in that debate, "No more troops. No more phony intelligence. No more blank checks. We must end this war."
Peter has also co-sponsored bills with the aim of ending the war in Iraq, including those offered by Reps. Woolsey, Waters, and Lee, and Rep. McGovern, which call for the phased withdrawal of American troops and no permanent American bases in Iraq.
But the most significant action to end the war comes this week when the House debates a supplemental spending bill. This bill prescribes in law that the combat troops leave Iraq no later than September 1, 2008 or earlier if specific benchmarks are not met by President Bush and the Iraqis. This is binding legislation that provides a clear path to end the war, rather than continue our open-ended engagement.
